A Coldplay Kind of Para-Para-Paradise

Forget the celebrity-sustainability cliches — here's how Coldplay is actually walking the walk, from a tour powered by fans to an album pressed from ocean plastic.

If you thought Coldplay was just another celebrity group waxing eloquent about sustainability and carbon emissions, you'd be very wrong.

By this point, we all know that their latest tour, Music of the Spheres — a first of its kind — is an ecological marvel. It's partly powered by energy generated by fans on kinetic dance floors and power bikes, runs on a 100% renewable battery system, and plants a tree for every ticket sold, which now adds up to over 5 million trees. But that's only the tip of this ecologically-conscious iceberg.

On the band's official site, you'll find their merch — all sustainably produced with eco-friendly inks, and once again, a tree planted for every purchase made. And recently, Chris Martin announced something even bigger.

That announcement was about their latest album, Moon Music, which features the world's first ECOCD — created from 90% recycled polycarbonate sourced from waste otherwise headed for landfill. It's part of a long-running partnership with The Ocean Cleanup project, diverting tons of plastic waste from Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala into something fans can hold in their hands. The collaboration has been years in the making, dating back to Coldplay's first involvement in 2021. Beyond funding, the band has also used their concerts to raise awareness about ocean conservation.

"Coldplay is a true testament to walking the talk — a class act all the way."
